gone fishin'

At 3 AM, I will be headed for the Portland airport to begin my day-long trek to Melaque. But it will be worth the effort to take the next step toward retirement.

I have decided not to take a lap top. The hassle for one week is more than I want to deal with. However, I am taking along some tools that may assist me in getting up some posts through internet cafés during the week.

And here I make a confession. I have been hooked up to the internet since the early 90s. But I have never been inside an internet café (other than on a cruise ship).

Be gentle, readers.

I don't like internet cafes and here in MX the keyboard is a Spanish keyboard. I guess if I used it enough I'd get use to it. Or even if I used the same internet cafe enough, I'd start to feel at home. So when we travel w/o the laptop, I just take a quick look at email and answer if necessary. I don't think I could put together a blog entry. All that said....please check in if at all possible and if not take notes so we'll be updated with a full travel report when you return. Good travel.

Have a great trip. We had never been inside an internet cafe either until the first time we came down here.
No problems, other than they can be noisy with the kids all playing loud games or music.
Just remember on the spanish keyboard to get the @ you need to hit ALT 64.

Why those spots are called cafés is beyond me. You´re not likely to find any café in one. Or anything to eat either. Just computers. Bon voyage.

Steve - If you're a PC person (and probably you are) you'll have no trouble in an Internet cafe. They're inexpensive, the operators are usually very helpful and you meet interesting people. Only I'm trying to remember where I saw one in Barra or Melaque and I'm drawing a blank. Maybe you can fill in the blank when you get there.

Hi Steve,

I hope you have a fabulous trip. As for internet cafes, well, "internet cafe" sounds a lot more glamorous than anything you will likely encounter in Mexico. Based on my own experience, there's rarely if ever any "cafe" part of the experience. It's more like a bunch of library carrels with computers, or just big tables with a lot of computers people can use. You'll pay about $10 pesos per hour, and they'll charge you on leaving.

Given the relative wealth of the USA and Europe and the relative cheapness of computers, internet cafes are rare if not entirely nonexistent in those places. So don't feel bad about not having been in one.

Good luck and buen viaje!

Get thee to an internet cafe. Needing to hear how it is going down there.

Enjoy your trip and the newness of the internet cafes. I read your piece about Jiggs and I truly think he is beautiful. I wonder, is he still okay? I'm worried about him and his pain. I know the sadness of losing a soulmate, as I lost my Chorizo (doggie) last year in October. The sadness is still with me and I will share in your sadness when Jiggs is gone. Life is beautiful and I am sure Jiggs has given you much happiness. I read your blog from time to time. Take care. Gloria from Modesto, CA

I've been so busy, and it was so good to settle in with your blog to discover that you are heading south. To learn about your new life? The possibilities that lay ahead? It's a different sort of trip...the journey when you imagine yourself staying beyond the visit. Living beyond the vacation. It all will look and feel so different, so exciting, scary, and well, just great. There's nothing quite like imagining buying that one way ticket that you will eventually purchase. Is this for me? you will ask every way possible. Time will tell, and I know you will tell us when you return. Travel safe. And finally, excellent choice...leave the LOCO BOX at home. The only connection you need is to yourself.
