cleaning up odds and ends

I actually accomplished a few things this week on my great move to Mexico.

Today I am walking the house sitter through the house. He is coming over with his 12-year old dog to learn how things operate here in Casa Algodón.

And it is a good opportunity to repair a maintenance hole that has existed since Christmas. While preparing for my family to arrive, my vacuum cleaner gave up its mechanical life in an acrid puff of rubberized smoke.

Since then, dust and Jiggs pelt has built up in the house. I broke down last night and bought a new vacuum cleaner at Costco: a Dyson DC14 Animal. I feel as if Jane Jetson is going to stop by to supervise my cleaning.

Earlier in the week, I went in to see my doctor in the hope of getting a physical examination before I leave. He set it up for late February. But, because I walked into the office, the nurse needed my weight.

YIKES. I have gained 27 pounds since my last visit. Of course, every time I buckled my pants, I knew that manifest destiny had been having its way with me. Those birthday pies -- and the accompanying Häagen-Dazs -- this month may have had something to do with it.

The obvious response to that news is what I am going to do about it. I suspect what I am going to do is just keep on eating. On the other hand, I will lay odds that when I leave work, a good deal of stress eating will stop.

But, as is true of every doctor visit I have ever made, I left out a major question: should I get any immunizations. I will take care of that during the physical examination -- I hope.

Each step is small. But I am getting closer and closer to my move.

I lived in Mexico many years ago. I lost a lot of weight that year in Guadlajara, most of it due to diet changes and exercise. Walking is key. And amoebas helped a lot too. I have lost weight a few times now b/c of dear old parasites here in Honduras and elsewhere. So... who knows?

The heat, the different diet and walking WILL take it off of you.
I know of no vaccinations that you need to live in Mexico. I certainly never have had any and have never heard anyone talk about that ever. So, cross THAT off the list!

I would get vaccinated against hepatitis.

Babs and Michael -- Hepatitis will most likely be on the list.

I never go to the doctor without a written list or I will SURELY forget the most important question.

Best of luck with everything.

Where our own state's implementation of mandatory health insurance has, at a stroke, created a shortage of doctors.

Kim -- I tried the list method. Of course, I left it on my desk. So, I decided to use my PDA. Left it in its cradle. I may need to rely on tattoo needles -- but not before I get that hepatitis immunization.

Great postscript. The market will have its way.

Wait a minute....we are in the same profession.....we have the same dog....and now we have the same vacuum cleaner!!! It truly is the best machine out there, esp. since we have the sheddiest breed of dog. I'm always amazed at how much it picks up and how come my dogs are not bald yet?!?!?

BoBo's Mom -- And what is it with dogs that they seem to start losing their undercoat during the coldest part of the winter? Are they simply trying to show that they are far hardier than we are? If so, I will gladly say: you win! I was brushing Jiggs last night and thought I had teased out a full cat.

Steve,

A postscript. One of the Hep Vaccines (I think it's "A") needs a booster 6 months after the first shot has been given. You should take this into your thinking. And of course, you could certainly get the second shot in Mexico. Probably the first too.

Kim -- Hep A is usually a three-stage vaccination. I can get the first stick here. Then, I will need to find somewhere in Melaque to complete the series -- assuming I go down that road.

In the two clinics in which I have checked recently, there was a combo Hep A and Hep B vaccination. It was a series of two shots, not three, covering both varieties. In Star Medica hospital in Morelia, it runs about 800 pesos. In a clinic near our apartment in Mexico City, it´s about 500 pesos. I´ll be getting it in Mexico City next month.

Michael -- I will check up on the easier vaccine. If I do not get it done before I leave, I will check in Melaque. Thanks for the advice.
