honoring the flag
I almost forgot. Today is Flag Day.
Mexican Flag Day. Dia de la bandera.
Mexico has honored its flag on 24 February each year since 1937 as part of a post-Revolution program to re-kindle national fervor.
The date was chosen because it was on 24 February 1821 that the leader of the independence insurgents, Vicente Guerrero, and the leader of the Spanish forces, Agustín de Iturbide, agreed Mexico should be independent from Spain in the Plan de Iguala.
Nine years ago, I wrote an essay on the history of the Mexican flag (bandera de méxico). That essay has had more hits than any other essay on Mexpatriate.
It probably needs to be updated. But, rather than re-plow old ground, I offer it to you as a Flag Day gift. Take a look.
Now, I need to rush back to my hotel room to decorate my Flag Day tree and to address my Flag Day cards.
